December 2021 Newsletter: Rounding up the year strong

I believe every child has an ability to think and reason – none is unintelligent. If one is unable to pass down knowledge to a six-years old child, that fellow is not knowledgeable enough.

The beauty of this class lies in its diversity, no homogeneity. We all get to learn from different perspectives. A fact is, I am learning new things myself.

We had an interesting activity last week Saturday. Our focus was on "assumptions". Perceiving assumption as one of the biggest source of conflicts and societal issues surrounding us, we noticed that in our day-to-day living, we make lots of assumptions which are not always the case.

AYITI Student creatively demonstrated why Nigeria needs peace and unity

We concluded that some ways to stop assumptions are to ask questions, form a second opinion that counters the assumption and then, give people benefit of doubt.

From our coding class, I taught the children flow chart and how it is important when solving programming problems. They learnt about Bugs & Syntax error in computer language and Software Life Cycle (SLC).

It is said that creativity stimulates the mind. So, for an activity on design, the children created interesting pieces of art centered on green-white-green colours in support of our country’s unity – we understand that we don’t have any other country/homeland.
Stay tuned for our next week's class; the children will be learning more about design concepts.

Our time together always seems too short but the goal is never deterred. This is yet my best class and set of children.

We had a Veil of Ignorance focused activity with the children in one of our classes and the children opinions about how the world should work interests me. Almost all the groups suggested that they want a world filled with love, equal rights and justice, a world without economic classes and a world that is accessible to all forms of disabled people (maybe because we have a friend with special needs amongst us). It is a very humbling experience for me seeing these children wish for a better world. I told them it is not enough to wish, we need to create the kind of world we want.

Adedayo Moshood came to the class to teach the children introduction to Design Concept and Wire Framing. It was heartwarming to have Dayo the very first AYITI student (as he describes himself) around. It was one of the most anticipated class by the children.
We ended the class with a video and discussion around disability, how inaccessible our road and facilities are. It is actually difficult to live as a person with special needs in Nigeria. We hope our Government can do better.

We will proceed to another week of fun and learning!!

PS: The class was broadcasted live on Instagram, it is a plan to make this a habit in our subsequent classes. You can follow our page to always be part of it.
